Savor and relax. Imagine doing a few gentle stretches or yoga poses before bed, lighting a scented candle and sipping some chamomile tea while you write in your journal. There are no to-do lists or pinging phones vying for your attention. You can simply be. Imagine how easy it would be to gradually unwind, release the tension of your day and ease into a restful, deep, restorative sleep in a space free of clutter and distractions. Once the busyness of the day is done, make time to simply relax in your newly cleared space. Take action: Once your bedroom is clean and clutter-free, pick and choose from the list below to enhance your space and get a better night's sleep: Use a linen spray or essential-oil diffuser with a relaxing scent like lavender or rose, keep a small vase of fresh flowers on your nightstand, do a few gentle stretches or yoga poses to help release the tensions of the day, take a warm bath with essential oils before bed, sip a cup of herbal tea and write in your journal, gradually dim the lights in your bedroom an hour before bed, ending with just a single candle before blowing it out and going to sleep.
A console table is a versatile piece of furniture that can be useful in many rooms of the house. It's slim in profile and airy in design, and can provide a small drawer for storage of personal items. In the bedroom, a console table can pull double duty as a nightstand and desk, or a nightstand and vanity, thanks to the open space that allows you to place a stool, ottoman or chair underneath. Console tables, seen here, frame a bed nicely when the same or similar style is placed on either side of the bed. Tip: If you aren't pairing matching tables, be sure the other night table is at least the height of the bed and of a similar width as the console table.
Some desks are just larger and wider versions of a night table. The flat surface of a desk can house a lamp, books and other nighttime necessities. If you have enough space, add a chair to create a dual-duty nightstand that also serves as a workspace. Tip: If your bed is placed in the middle of the wall and you add a desk on one side, be sure to put another piece of furniture that's at least the height of the mattress on the other side. And use lamps of the same height — they don't need to be the same style — on both pieces of furniture. These things will prevent the room from looking too furniture-heavy on one side.
Step stool. A repurposed step stool is a smart, budget-friendly and space-saving substitute for a night table. Whether designed for a child's room, the kitchen or the garage, stools often have small proportions that are good for small spaces. A typical step stool measures 15 to 18 inches wide and about 21 inches high, making it a good fit for many beds. Tip: Since a table lamp might take over much of the surface area of your step stool, consider installing a wall sconce above it instead. That way, you'll have room on the stool to place books, reading glasses or a vase. If your bedroom allows space, pair the stool with a similar-size furniture piece on the other side of the bed.
